Heart of a Champion
Creativity, concentration, patience, foresight, and strength are essential for anyone’s road to success. Only a miracle would allow all of these traits to be nurtured and developed in a single game. That miracle is chess. One of the most popular, intriguing, and phenomenal games ever created, chess is both intellectually challenging and enjoyable. I played my first game of chess at age five, and for the past nine years, my love for the game has grown. Each day I find myself glued to the chessboard, hoping to enhance my chess abilities and learn something new. At fourteen, I realized that the joy that I received from chess could be brought to many others. So I created the chess club.
Bernard Meltzer once said, “Happiness is like a kiss. You must share it to enjoy it.” I never fully understood his words until the first club meeting, when a roomful of young, attentive faces smiled at me from across a chess board. Each chess club meeting, I came with one goal: to make the kids smile. Through their jubilant laughter, bright smiles, and eager faces, I achieved my goal of delivering happiness through chess. Although sometimes the kids liked to have fun, and let their wild side run loose, I definitely saw improvement in their behavior, their character, and their knowledge. Throughout the course, we went over many entertaining aspects of the game such as bug house, sack city, and plain old chess while learning strategies such as checks, captures, threats, and the well-known four move Checkmate. The students have never failed to impress me as they grasp difficult concepts of the game quickly and find opportunities to practice chess at home. However, the most extraordinary moments are when I see the kids developing passion. They pursue chess with a fierce drive — and this perseverance is the difference between winning and losing. These students’ determination and diligence is what gives them the heart of a champion. Through thick and thin, rain and shine, wins and losses, I will always be proud of them. I hope that anyone who sees this message can give me a chance — or give chess a chance — to show you all of its miraculous wonders.
